Hugelculture Raised Beds--they're
a lot of work setting up--dig a trench, fill with wood, then cover with
layers of the removed soil, compost, manure, minerals--just like
lasagna. Finally, a layer a 30cm deep of rotted leaves. The result? No
turning the soil, no watering and very little weeding for years. Not
quite permanent, but a great way to produce organic vegetables with
minimum effort for years to come. This method comes courtesy of Germany
and is one example of looking for the best globally to achieve the best
outcome. BTW, we also put in a layer of biochar, whose use originated in
the Amazon!
