  1. OUR VALUES

SUSTAINABILITY

Example--Here is the partially completed deck on one of our houses, constructed of nearly 100% recycled wood and hardware. The vertical beams came from a house in town that was torn down; they rested for over 100 years on its foundation, without any rot whatsoever! They're super heavy and much stronger than necessary here, but a good representative of how recycling amazing old materials can be so much better than the materials available today. Just takes a little awareness and effort!

PERMACULTURE

Hugelculture Raised Beds--they're a lot of work setting up--dig a trench, fill with wood, then cover with layers of the removed soil, compost, manure, minerals--just like lasagna. Finally, a layer a 30cm deep of rotted leaves. The result? No turning the soil, no watering and very little weeding for years. Not quite permanent, but a great way to produce organic vegetables with minimum effort for years to come. This method comes courtesy of Germany and is one example of looking for the best globally to achieve the best outcome. BTW, we also put in a layer of biochar, whose use originated in the Amazon!

COMMUNITY

Our friends from the UK who stayed with us for a month helping out with permaculture treated us and a few of our local friends to a certified British pub dinner complete with fish cake, greens, corn, and apple crumble. YUM! At GP Mura we love having worlds collide as our local friends learn about different cultures and our visitors can get in touch with our community. Nothing beats getting to know someone like over a home cooked meal.

INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE

Pictured here are people from France, Japan, Denmark, Hong Kong and China...a typical cross-section at any time of the year. We intentionally try to keep the mix of visitors diverse, while also being very conscious not to discriminate on any unfair basis. (We are fairly intolerant of intolerance, however.) That includes not excluding people based on the politics of their country--as long as they don't support the intolerant policies. Heck, we even occasionally accept Americans!
